Acknowledging innovation
In 2022, Hardshell won one of six of the inaugural nationwide prizes awarded by USFWS to conservation innovators. Our proposal, Creating a No-Fly Zone for Nuisance Bird, won the "Promoting Nonlethal Human-Wildlife Conflict" category.
National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research Grant
Remotely Operated Avian Management
The 2021 award of a highly competitive NSF SBIR grant allowed us to create a first ever internet connected avian repulsion laser. We have used the system to drive ravens away from several subsidy sites in the Mojave Desert.
The Living Desert Conservation Hero Award
For desert conservation contributions
During the 2024 Summit, The Living Desert will award eight conservation heroes, including Hardshell's Tim Shields, a total of more than $150,000 to further their impact of saving threatened and endangered species and ecosystems.
US Patent for Remote Fluid Application System
The crucial tool for remote egg oiling
In October of 2023 we received our first US patent: for the RFAS oil delivery system. This device is the heart of remote egg oiling. It combines a live video camera and oil delivery components to accurately treat raven eggs, preventing them from hatching.
